Psychological Associate · California · checked August 31, 2026
Your 72-month registration clock is not your 3,000-hour licensure clock.
First decide whether Psychological Associate registration is the right lawful route. Then keep four ledgers separate: education evidence, registration time, weekly supervision, and SPE credit.
Check my route →The first distinction
Registration is one supervised-experience setting, not a universal stage.
A formal APA, APPIC or CAPIC internship, qualifying doctoral training, and some exempt settings can support experience under different rules. Do not spend registration months merely because the label sounds like the normal next step. See the complete California psychologist license route →
No work before approval
The Board says a person may not provide psychological services as a Psychological Associate before registration approval. A new primary supervisor also requires Board approval before services begin under that supervisor.
Private route and clock workspace
Check eligibility, clock pressure, supervision and fees together.
Use estimates. The supervision result is not an hour audit: it surfaces the published weekly floor and the 44-hour credit cap so you can test a proposed workweek before relying on it.
Registration route
Clocks and weekly work
Private by design: nothing entered here is stored or submitted. This organizes the Board’s published rules; only the Board can decide whether education, supervision or experience qualifies.
Choose the legal container first
The same clinical work can sit inside different Board pathways.
| Pathway | What makes it distinct | Question before relying on it |
|---|---|---|
| Psychological Associate registration | Board-approved registration tied to approved primary supervisor(s) and service location(s) | Has approval issued before services start, and is registration time still available? |
| Formal internship / doctoral training | The Board identifies APA, APPIC, CAPIC and certain qualifying doctoral training routes | Does the program and placement satisfy the route actually being claimed? |
| Exempt setting | Some public, academic and institutional settings operate under statutory exemptions and their own time limits | Has the employer verified the exact exemption and your deadline in writing? |
Registration is not a substitute for checking which statute governs the setting. The Board decides whether submitted experience qualifies.
Three published education routes
The evidence changes with the degree and where it was earned.
Psychology, or education with a specialization in educational, counseling or school psychology; the Board reviews the official transcript.
The institution must document admission to candidacy after at least three years of postgraduate education in a qualifying psychology doctorate.
A doctorate that satisfies the psychologist licensure education provision can support the registration route.
Foreign education boundary
A foreign doctorate requires a credential evaluation from a NACES member or the National Register, sent directly to the Board. The Board currently says a foreign master’s is not accepted for Psychological Associate registration.
Supervisor checkpoints
Approval, employment and availability all matter before the hours do.
Before psychological functions begin
- Every primary and delegated supervisor is a licensed psychologist.
- The primary supervisor is employed in the same setting and has completed the required six-hour supervision course within the two-year cycle.
- The primary supervisor is available 100% of the time psychological services are rendered, in person or through an allowed communication method.
- No supervisor has the prohibited family, intimate, business, psychotherapy-client or other conflicting relationship.
- One psychologist supervises no more than three Psychological Associates.
- The written Supervision Agreement and plan are complete when the work is intended as SPE.
- The Board has approved each primary supervisor before services begin; delegated-supervisor changes use a new agreement rather than PSB 101.
- The associate does not pay a supervision fee, independently lease clinical office space, or advertise independently.
Two cumulative clocks
Active time counts toward 72 months. Inactive time pauses it, but only for 30 months.
| Status | Published effect | Failure mode |
|---|---|---|
| Active | Registration time continues counting toward the cumulative 72-month maximum | Assuming a job gap pauses the clock when the registration is still active |
| Inactive | The 72-month clock pauses; no psychological functions may be performed | Missing annual renewal filing or exceeding the cumulative 30-month inactive maximum |
| Expired / delinquent | Active renewal becomes delinquent after expiry; the Board says cancelation follows after 60 days without renewal | Treating cancelation like an ordinary late renewal instead of a new application |
Inactive status still requires annual renewal, but the Board lists no inactive renewal fee. Extensions are case-by-case, not automatic.
Changes have deadlines
Report address, supervisor and service-location changes within 30 days. A change under the same primary supervisor may not carry a fee; adding each primary supervisor does.
Weekly SPE test
A busy week can still fail the supervision rule.
| Rule | Published boundary | Working implication |
|---|---|---|
| Weekly credit cap | No more than 44 credited hours, including supervision | Fifty worked hours do not become fifty SPE hours |
| Total supervision | At least 10% of total time worked each week | Calculate the percentage from work performed, not merely the 44-hour credit cap |
| Direct individual supervision | At least one hour each week, face-to-face | The calculator cannot verify modality; document the direct individual hour separately |
| Weekly log | Maintain the weekly SPE log | Do not reconstruct months of work from memory |
| No double count | The same SPE cannot be credited through another pathway | Name the governing pathway on the record |
The 10% floor and one-hour direct individual requirement operate together. The Board and applicable supervisor decide whether the complete arrangement qualifies.
Application, renewal and cost
The cheapest dependency is often the one requested first.
Build in dependency order
- Official transcript sent directly by the institution, or candidacy letter stating date, degree, specialization and three-plus postgraduate years.
- Direct credential evaluation for a foreign doctorate, if applicable.
- Live Scan fingerprints using the Board form.
- PSB 101 and $210 for each primary supervisor being added.
- Supervision Agreement and detailed plan when hours are intended as SPE.
- Copies and delivery records for the application, deficiency responses and every later change.
| 2026 Board charge | Amount |
|---|---|
| Initial Psychological Associate application | $424 |
| Annual active renewal | $224 |
| Add each primary supervisor | $210 |
| Delinquency fee | $112 |
| Inactive annual renewal | $0 |
The processing queue changes. The Board says unresolved deficiencies after 90 days can cause withdrawal; use the current fee schedule and processing page when filing.
