The actual sequence

Do not collapse five decisions into “apply and test.”

Registration is permission to accrue

A degree does not itself activate California associate status. Select the correct application route, complete fingerprint requirements, and preserve any employer evidence required for a claimed 90-day-rule period.

Law and Ethics is an annual associate obligation

The exam must be taken annually until passed to renew. It must be passed for a subsequent registration and before the clinical examination handoff.

The licensure application comes before clinical-exam eligibility

The Board relays eligibility only after it approves the licensure application and the California Law and Ethics Exam is passed. The NBCC then administers the NCMHCE.

Passing is not issuance

After passing the clinical exam, separately request the initial license and pay the initial fee within one year. Do not treat the score report as an active license.

Deadline protection

Put these dates in a calendar you control.

Registration lifespan

An associate registration has a six-year lifespan with five renewals until 31 December 2026, and seven years with six renewals from 1 January 2027. A subsequent number may be available, but it changes where an associate may work and requires the Law and Ethics Exam to be passed.

Initial clinical exam

Take the clinical exam within one year of the later triggering event described by the Board: application approval or passing Law and Ethics. Missing the deadline closes the licensing file.

Clinical re-exam

The published retake waiting period is 30 days for this exam. A failed attempt also starts a one-year deadline to retake and preserve application eligibility.

Initial license

Request issuance and pay the fee within one year after passing the clinical exam.

Why a closed file matters: reapplying means a new fee and the requirements then in force. Because experience sits inside a rolling window (six years, seven from 1 January 2027), delay may also strand older approved hours.

Controlling sources

Use current Board instructions for the packet you submit.

This roadmap is orientation, not a determination of eligibility. Fees, forms, vendor rules, and processing instructions can change. The linked Board page is the control point before mailing, paying, scheduling, or relying on a deadline.

Source notes

Use the citations and any dated evidence records to check the claims relevant to your task. This label is not a verification status.

You should not have to work this part out on your own.

Once a month: free tools and apps worth having, better ways to run the admin side of a practice, what other California therapists are actually doing, and anything new here that might save you an afternoon.

About monthly. One click to leave. Never sold, never shared. The consent box is separate and unticked because California requires it — and because it should be.
