California · ASW → LCSW · rules checked 28 August 2026
The ASW record is not one 3,000-hour bucket.
Track the four requirements that can finish on different dates, then protect the weekly record the Board may ask to see.

Protect the record
Hours are only as durable as the paperwork around them.
At the start
Confirm a current associate registration or a documented 90-day-rule exception. Complete the Supervision Agreement within 60 days of beginning with each supervisor. Confirm the supervisor and work setting qualify.
Every week
Use a separate Board weekly log for each supervisor and setting. Keep category totals separate, apply the 40-hour weekly ceiling, and obtain the supervisor's signature weekly.
When supervision ends
Have the supervisor sign the Experience Verification immediately. Keep it with the agreement and weekly logs instead of trying to reconstruct the relationship years later.
Every renewal and before applying
Until 31 December 2026, take the California Law and Ethics Exam each renewal cycle until passed (from 1 January 2027 renewal no longer needs an attempt); complete three hours of law-and-ethics CE per associate renewal, keep registration current, and test the rolling window (six years, seven from 1 January 2027) before submitting (the associate clocks calculator dates the window, the registration's end and the 104-week floor).

The planner reflects the current public rules record and the linked BBS publications. Unusual settings, old hours, out-of-state experience, breaks in registration, or missing signatures require the Board's materials and may require professional advice.
