Joining Health Net as a therapist

The behavioral-health application, what to verify before accepting a member, and a dedicated correction for the plan sometimes described as “Health Net UC Hastings.”

Can a California therapist apply?

Yes. Health Net publishes a California Behavioral Health Network Participation Request specifically for psychiatrists, MFTs, LCSWs, psychologists, qualified autism service providers and behavioral-health facilities. Submission requests participation; it does not establish a contract, rate or effective date.

“Health Net” is not enough information

Health Net of California administers multiple commercial, Medicare and Medi-Cal products. A therapist can be participating for one product or delegated arrangement without being available under every Health Net card. Before accepting a referral, verify:

The Health Net application sequence

  1. Choose the behavioral-health form. Health Net tells MFTs, LCSWs and psychologists not to submit its physician or ancillary forms.
  2. Complete the current PDF request. Follow the submission instructions printed on the form; do not rely on an old saved copy.
  3. Prepare credentialing data. Align license, Type 1 NPI, W-9, liability insurance, work history, specialties and practice locations.
  4. Establish product scope. Ask which commercial, Medicare, Medi-Cal or delegated networks the proposed agreement actually includes.
  5. Review rates and operational rules. Confirm your common CPT codes, telehealth billing and authorization requirements in writing.
  6. Wait for the effective date. Then verify the directory listing and a sample member’s eligibility before scheduling at scale.

The “UC Hastings Health Net” version

Current correction: UC Hastings College of the Law is now UC Law San Francisco. For the 2026–27 academic year, the school states that students are automatically enrolled in UC SHIP unless they obtain a waiver. Its public pages do not identify the current student plan as “Health Net UC Hastings.”

UC Law SF separately gives all students access to Carbon Health primary, virtual and mental-health services regardless of their insurance. Carbon Health access and the student’s insurance network are different things: the school states that a student who waives UC SHIP remains eligible for Carbon Health, while that student’s own Medi-Cal or private plan controls designated primary-care and specialty benefits.

If a referral actually says “Health Net UC Hastings”

Treat that wording as a clue, not a verified product name. It may describe an older school-year arrangement, a waived student using separate Health Net coverage, an employer or dependent plan, or informal shorthand carried forward after the school changed names. Before promising in-network care:

  1. Ask for the exact plan/network name and behavioral-health number from the current card.
  2. Verify the member and your rendering NPI for the intended date and service code.
  3. Ask whether Carbon Health, UC Law SF Student Health Services or another primary-care source must initiate a referral.
  4. Record the representative, reference number, authorization requirement and quoted cost sharing.
  5. Do not advertise yourself as accepting “UC Hastings Health Net” unless the payer confirms that exact current network relationship.

For current UC Law SF students

The correct starting points are the school’s UC SHIP page, the student’s current identification card, and UC Law SF Student Health Services—not an archived Health Net directory. The school lists healthserviceshelp@uclawsf.edu for student-health assistance and Academic HealthPlans for UC SHIP enrollment and waiver administration.

Reimbursement and claims

Health Net does not publish a universal California outpatient therapist fee schedule for prospective commercial providers. Request the allowed amounts for 90791, 90834, 90837, 90846 and 90847 and identify the product attached to each schedule. Medi-Cal maximums and Medicare rules are separate from a Health Net commercial agreement.

Direct contracting and platform access are also distinct. If a platform gives access to a Health Net-funded member, confirm who contracts with Health Net, who pays you, whether the credential follows you, and what happens to active clients if you leave the platform.

Common administrative failures

Run the Health Net offer

Enter the written allowed amount, expected Health Net fill rate, claims cost and unpaid verification time. If the referral is connected with UC Law SF, model only after the current card confirms that Health Net is actually the payer and names the network.

Research boundary: no current primary source reviewed identifies a “Health Net UC Hastings” student plan. That phrase should be verified from the member’s current card rather than converted into a directory category.
