Is the network open?

Provider Express publishes an individual-clinician application route. Its open commercial and Medicare Advantage statement appears within an Arizona availability notice dated 13 April 2023. That notice does not establish current California network availability. Confirm participation for the specific product with Optum.

Optum, UnitedHealthcare and the contract

UnitedHealthcare coverage may use Optum for behavioral-health network and provider operations. Do not assume that one approval covers every UnitedHealthcare, Optum, employer, EAP or Medicare Advantage product. The welcome material and contract should name the participating products and billing instructions.

Application sequence

  1. Start at Provider Express. Use the individual-clinician instructions if that is your route. The page directs you to register or sign in, then choose Join Our Network. Group and facility routes are separate.
  2. Prepare CAQH and identifiers. Keep NPI, W-9, license, liability insurance, taxonomy and locations consistent.
  3. Complete network and product questions. Describe specialty, populations, languages, modality and current capacity accurately.
  4. Track credentialing requests. Record when Optum treats the application as complete.
  5. Review the participation agreement and fee schedule. Identify Optum, UnitedHealthcare and Medicare Advantage product scope.
  6. Confirm effective date and directory listing. Test eligibility and claims workflow before scaling referrals.

Reimbursement and platform comparisons

Optum does not publish a universal California outpatient therapist fee schedule. Ask for allowed amounts for your actual codes and whether different products use different schedules. Confirm telehealth modifiers, place of service, EAP authorization rules and claim-submission channel.

Direct and platform access are different products. A platform may pay you for an Optum- or UnitedHealthcare-funded visit without transferring its payer contract to you. Compare the written net rate, credential portability, claims work, referrals and termination terms.

Common problems

Optum / UHC scenario

Model 10 weekly sessions across the actual product mix. Separate ordinary commercial sessions, EAP-authorized visits and Medicare Advantage if their rates or administrative requirements differ. Price each authorization or claims task as working time.
